O-I’s investment in black glass is built on market research the company conducted in the US and European countries to understand how consumers perceive colors in packaging. This unveiled the potential for black glass. They hold a glass beverage packaging in black for a distinctive and mysterious premium experience. Black Glass offers superior light and UV protection and is recyclable in the amber cullet stream.
Already five years ago, O-I was a pioneer in black glass when it developed a new process, enabling full inspection and quality control, flexibility as well as substandard production volumes. Some solutions jointly developed by O-I and its customers have hit the market with huge success: For beer, American brewer MillerCoors recently introduced its premium beer Miller Fortune in O-I black glass bottles.. European success stories include Hendrick’s Gin from Scottish William Grant & Sons, Edrington's whiskey bottles of The Black Grouse and Cutty Sark Prohibition, and French sparkling wine Belaire Rosé.
“Aspirational lifestyles and quality over quantity consumption drive the ongoing premiumization trend. Black Glass offers a premium solution to the continued need for distinctive packaging”, says Robert Brouwer, Specialty Business Leader at O-I Europe. Evan Williams, Beer Segment Director at O-I Europe: “Beer is a great product and deserves great packaging, we want to elevate brands to differentiate them from the competition. Our latest Black glass offering is a good example of how O-I is supporting our customers to create value.”
